NEW CENTURY
ln
the second
half
of the
20th
century, AIDS or
acquired
immuno-de-
ficiency
syndrome has overwhelmed
the African Continent. AIDS was first
discovered
in
USA on June
5,
1981.
Since then,
the
Pasteur
lnstitute
in
France, the National Cancer lnstitute
in
USA and
the
University of California at
San Francisco have separately discov-
ered
the
human immuno-deficiency vF
rus (HlV) to be responsible
for
AIDS. ln
the
year
1994, an
estimated
17 million
people have been infected;
by
2,000,
the
figure
may reach
46
million, as
much
asTO
Y"
of the cases occur in Africa
alone.
Although China is not
a
high-
risk country,
AIDS
has
already an
up-
ward trend and there are
500,000
people infected; in
1999
alone, 170,000
die from
AIDS.The
World Health Orga-
nization
has had
dedicated conferences
addressing specially on the topic of in-
ternational control of
AIDS. The
ulti-
mate aim
is
to reverse the ever-spread-
ing
trend of AIDS
by
the year
2015.
Policy of
control include: Government
realization, mass participation, narrow-
ing the gap between
the
rich and the
poor countries would all help to control
this
Monster of
the
New Century.
