MYSTERIOUS
ILLNESS -
FAMILIAL
DRUG
ALLERGY
With
so
much new drugs
in
the
market,
the
phenomenon of
familial
drug allergy
has
also
occurred more
often. As
these are
rare,
the phenom-
enon may be missed but inappropriate
treatment
may result.
Once lhere
was
an exceeding rare case of sensitivity
to
anaesthetic
medication during
surgery
-
a
sudden high fever
of
41oC.
Fortunately,
the
anaethetist was sharp
enough
to
recognize this form of famil-
ial drug sensitivity. ln another
case,
abdominal pain as
a
reaction to
a
pain
killer occurring
because
of
a familial
metabolic disorder was trealed as for
appendicitis.
The whole family
went
through
blood
tests to determine
the ex-
tent
of
the
disorder.
Another
rare case
of
17
family members in 3 generations
had an unusual sensitivity to an antibi-
otic
(Streptomycin injection)
even
though the dosage
was
far
below
that
causing dealness
in
non-sensitive
individuals.
The
last
case concerned
a
"G6PD-deficiency" so that
even
small
doses of
drugs
like
aspirin
or even the
smell of camphor would
lead
to deep
jaundice
due
to
haemolytic anaemia
(massive disintegration of red cells).
ln
all these
cases, whenever
there
is
known
familial drug
sensitivity, the
prompt quoting
of
such would help both
the
doctor and
the
patient
tremendously.
