A couple with normal sexual
life
but
without
any
contraception
is
consid-
ered
to
be
inlertile
if
there
is no con-
ception after 2 years.
Many infertile
couples face
so much
pressure lrom the
clan and
the
relatives that
their marriage
may be at stake. Hence, solving their
infertility
problem
would
not
only
com-
plete
their family
but
also
help
to
relieve
their
pressure, strengthen
their
mar-
riage bonds and even help
social
stability.
Management
consists
of
physicals,
checking semen,
body tem-
perature (to detect ovulation time,
if
any), ultrasound of
the
pelvis, serum
sex hormone levels, etc.
"Test tube
baby" or
in
vitro
fertilisation (lVF) means
harvesting the ripe ovum
at
the ovary
by a
small puncture through the vagina;
fertilising the
ovum outside
the
body
and when stable, implant
into
the womb
of
the wife to
grow
to
maturity. Babies
so produced are
no
different from
the
natural
ones.
For poor
quality
sperms,
lCSl
(intracytoplasmic
sperm
injection)
or manual fertilisation of the ovum may
help. IVF
enables PGD (preimplantation
genetic diagnosis) with which certain
genetically determined diseases can
be
detected even before implanting to the
uterus.
However,
despite the obvious
contribution
of
IVF
to
mankind,
a
lot
of
ethical problems still exist.
