UNITED EFFOHTTO
AVOID
HUMAN
DISASTER.THE
ANTHRAX BACTERIA
The anthrax bacteria
has
a
long
history.
lt occurs
in
the soil and
herds
that feed on grass
may
be
infected.
Human infection used
to
occur
in
the
Near
East
and
in
Alrica
and
were known
as "wool
sorters'disease",
or "rag pick-
ers' disease". Clinically, skin
infection
is
milder and may result
in
skin
eruptions, ulceration and
swelling;
the
occasional anthrax pneumonia
is
much
more serious and
rapidly fatal.
Although
the bacteria can
be
killed
by sunlight,
heat and antiseptics,
e.9.,
potassium
permanganate, hydrogen
peroxide,
etc.,
the
bacterial spores survive ad-
verse conditions
in
the soil for up
to
15
years.
The
incubation period before in-
fection manifests
is
1-3
days; when
inhaled,
chills
and fever occur,
the
pa-
tient is
rapidly
toxic along with
cough,
breathlessness, cyanosis, chest
pain
and blood-stained phlegm,
etc. Treat-
ment
with
antibiotics must
start
even
belore symptoms appear, otherwise the
patient
may
die. Prevention
has
to
be
mutli-faceted:
strict
control
of
the
sources of infection; severing all routes
of spread and protection of susceptible
subjects.
Because
of
the
peculiar
properties, anthrax can be
a
biological
weapon. ln
this
way,
the whole world
has united to abate such deadly bacte-
ria
from causing human harm, other-
wise
the disaster
in immense.
