ln China, there are
at
least
100
million patients
with
hypertension or
high blood pressure. Llnfortunately,
a
lot
of them may have some wrong con-
cepts on hypertension drugs, with
di-
sastrous
results. A
20-year-old
Huang
Junior
fainted during
physical training;
his blood pressure was as high
as
200/
120. However, Huang
Junior did
not
seek
further
medical
advice as
in-
structed but
self-medicated
anti-
hypertensives
that
seemed
to work well.
However, his urine
became
lesser and
lesser
and
his blood pressure went up
even higher
-
young subjects with
hy-
pertension should always
be
fully
investigated,
e.9.,
in
this
case, there
was narrowing
of
the
kidney
artery
but
inappropriate medication worsen
his
kidney function. Mr Ho had chronic
stomach ulcer and
a
recent onset of
hypertension.
He
took a complex for-
mula of anti-hypertensives but
ended
up in
severe bleeding of his ulcer
and
nearly died from one
of
the drugs
in
the
formula. The
old
Mr Cheung took
a
"beta-blocker"
for
his hypertension for
years
but
decided to add
on a
"calcium-
ion antagonist" for better
control
of his
fluctuating
blood
pressure.
He
ended up
with severe dizziness as his heart beat
went down
to
only
40 a
minute - the
wrong combination
of
anti-
hypertensives.
