Diabetes
is
due to mallunctioning
of
the hormone insulin
responsible
for
suppressing high blood sugar
levels.
Both
type
I
or "juvenile type" and type ll
or "adult type"
have
genetic predispo-
sition
but
type
I is much stronger.
For
type
ll,
lite
style may still
play
an impor-
tant role, e.9.,
overeating
or
obesity
would
certainly
contribute to
the
even-
tual
development of
type
ll
diabetes.
lt
seems
that the
more
fat
in
the
body,
the higher would
be
the requirement for
insulin.
For
type
l,
a lot of patients have
family history
of
diabetes
- around 25-
507o.
Moreover,
when
1
identical twin
gets
type
I diabetes,
the
other
twin
would get it
soon.
According to
recent
research, whether it
is
type
I
or
ll, the
genetic component is proven
beyond
doubt.
The chance
of
both
identical
twins getting diabetes
is
as high as 60-
90%.There
is
also
a
constant difference
in
the
incidence rates between
the
sexes
- females
are 2-3
times
more
prevalent. For
those subjects
having
both parents diabetic, the fasting sugar
level
is higher than controls.
Probably
multiple genetic factors are
involved.
Much
further work
is required.
