THE HEALTHCARE OFTHE
MENOPAUSE
The
menopause represents
the
gradual change
of
ovarian
function
-
from
partial to
complete
degeneration.
It
is a significant transition from
a
period ol active
reproduction to
that
of
elderly
inactivity.
The secretion of the
female hormone oestrogen
is
gradually
reduced until
a critical
level at which
cessation
of
menses
occurs
-
the
menopause.
ln
Chinese women, this
occurs
at
the
average
age ol 49.5
years,
with a usual range
ol
between
44lo
54
years.
ln
fact,
after
this menopause, the
ovarian function continues
to
d e
generate
further.
The
menopausal
syndrome
noted
by
these women may
be any of
these:
hot
flushes, sweating,
frequency
of
urination, loss of sexual
desire,
excessive
heart
beats,
insomnia, poor memory,
lack
of
concentration,
worrisome,
depression,
emotionally
labile and
agitation.
Later,
there would
be
gradual atrophy
of the
breasts, the external genitalia,
and
signs of osteoporosis or even frank
fracture of bones.
Hormone replacement
therapy
is considered
lor those
with
signif
icant symptoms. Progestrogens
should also
be
taken otherwise
the
tendency to
get cancer of the womb
may be
higher. Always
consult
your
doctor and
perform
the
necessary
checks
initially
and
periodically.
Psychological support and understand-
ing are paramount; other treatments,
e.9., for
the head, blood pressure
and
depression
must
also
be
given
concurrently.
