From
a Forbidden
Drug

-
EP0 to
Treating
Anaemia
Clinically
Usually, when
steroid
stimulants
are
taken, their
metabolites formed
after their
degradation would
be
passed out through the urine. ln this
way, athletes taking such
steroid
stimulants could easily
be
spotted,
just
by
checking
their
urine
for
such
metabolites. However, recently, a new
type
of
drug (EPO) that can
increase
the
red
cells
in
the
blood
and,
in turn,
can
provide more oxygen
to
the
muscles
for enhancement
of physical
performance. Fortunately,
or
unfortunately, EPO is metabolized
in
the
liver and there would not be any
metabolites
detectable
in
the
urine.
However,
the adverse
etfects
of
EPO
may include
thickening
of the blood
in
the
body so
that
blood
clots much more
readily resulting in catastrophes
like
stroke as the clots travel and block up
the blood supply of essential
organs.
ln
fact,
the
recommended
way
of
boosting
the
red
cells
in
the
body
is
to
take
food
rich in iron,
e.9.,
liver, beef,
etc., or some specially prepared
iron
tablets containing
fenous
compounds
would be safer and
iust
as effective,
even though a few months'
time
is
required lor such a boost.
By
far, the
most prudent
way
is
to
consult your
doctor.
