Although "emotion" and "mood" are
often used interchangeably
in
daily
life,
"emotional psychiatric disorder"
is
preferred in
medicine. Depression
is
twice as common
in
the female
and
tends
to
be more severe
in
unhappy
marriages; risk factors
of
depression
also include: the lack of heterosexual
intimate relationship, lack ol vitality or
self
-conf
idence, insecure personality,
introvert character. ln
general, the
cultural and
intellectual standards of
those with depression are
higher than
those
with
schizophrenia
(split
personality). Recent studies
confirmed
subtle anatomical changes
demon-
strable by sophisticated
scans.
Tran-
sient
biochemical
changes
are
associated
with normal
emotional
fluctuation but those of
emotional
psychiatric
disturbance tend to be
long
lasting
or
even
permanent.
Brain
wave changes
demonstrable
by
electro-encephalogram
can
differen-
tiate
between
"psychotic"
from
"somatic"
psychiatric
d
isorde rs.
The
most
si
gnif
icant
advancement
is
the
combination of
various
professionals
currently
dealing with certain aspects
of
psychiatric
disorders - all
of them
contribute
ably
their own expertise but
it
would be difficult for the psychiatric
patient
to
iniegrate all these benelits
into
a
meaningful whole. Advances
in
psychiatric
medication are also
in
line
with
biochemical
research
in
these
patients
so
that they
are
more
and
more specific
in
action and
side
effects are also less
lhan
before.
