USA alone, it is estimated
that
there are now
40
million with hyperten-
sion
or
high blood pressure and,
in
China, 120 million. However, T0-80 mil-
lion of
these
still
do not realize that they
have
hypertension.
The delay
in
treat-
ment may
lead
to more complications
like stroke, coronaries, heart and kid-
ney failure etc., would cripple
the
patient. Hypertension
is
any
blood
pres-
sure
above
140
systolic
or 90
diastolic
in adults, regardless of age. These dis-
eases are
not limited to
the
rich or
the
office workers.
ln
fact, the death
rates
are the
same
for
urban
or
rural
populations.
Hypertension often
starts
to develop
in
the young but manifesta-
tions
require decades.
All
patients
should
recognize well
their
disease by
applying the correct definition, other-
wise substantial numbers of patients
would
be missed. Always take anti-hy-
pertensive agents on a regular basis. lt
is never advisable to stop such agents
after
a
few days upon "feeling
better".
The worst
is for
some
patients
to con-
sult the doctor only when they
have
severe headache due to grossly
high
blood pressure and then, after taking a
few days' of drugs, thought that the dis-
ease is already controlled.
This
is
ask-
ing for complications of hypertension.
