THE ANALYSIS OF A CASE
OF
STROKE
A
former
Prime Minister of Japan
had a "minor" stroke (from over stress)
at
1 am on April 2.

that
day,
thrombosis
of
the brain was diagnosed
but
by
8 pm, CT scanning done
upon
acute exacerbation found haemorrhage
ol the
brain.
Strokes
are
of
the
haemorrhagic
or the
thrombosis
(abnormal
clotting
inside
the
artery)
or
embolic (blood clot elsewhere reaching
the artery)
types.
Perhaps
in
this case,
embolism rather
than
thrombosis
occurred, followed
by
haemorrhage. He
actually
had
a
cardiac
pace-maker im-
planted
in
1987. Blood clots
forming
in
the
diseased heart could reach
the
brain.
A
second
but
more
remote pos-
sibility was that the doctors were using
agents
in a
desperate attempt to "dis-
solve" the blood clot, so much
so
that
he
started to bleed
in
the
brain.
Another
query was whether the diagnosis was
well confirmed
by
Trans-Cranial
Dop-
pler
(TCD) as
both
MRI
and
CT
scans
were believed
to
be not
sensitive
enough during the early stages of such
episodes. OnApril
3, in
coma, the Prime
Minister
had
to
be sustained by
a
respirator. Even
if he
could recover, the
mental
function would sutfer - a
sad
story of how continued stress can af-
fect our
health.
