Diabetes
can
be
divided into
3
kinds
of
"exhaustion", upper, middle
and lower,
roughly corresponding to
involvement
of
the lung, stomach
and
the kidneys
plus
the hormonal systems.
There are
also 3
clinical syndromes: the
yin-deficiency and "heat" type; dual de-
ficiencies
of
both qi and yin type and
dual deficiencies of
yin
and yang type.
Treatment is mainly directed towards
cultivating the yin and generating body
fluids,
as well as clearing
the
heat.
Those
with
upper exhauslion
are
treated
by the
well-known
White
Tiger
decoction with Ginseng
added.
Those
with middle exhaustion are treated
by
the Jade Maid Decoction
or
equivalent.
Those with
lower
exhaustion
are
treated
by
the
Pill
of Six
Drugs Containing
Rehmanniae Preparata or
equivalent.
The principle
of
treating exhaustion
is
to
restore
the kidney plus
hormonal
systems. Most herbalists already
rec-
ognized
the
importance
of
"heat"
but
there are
3
distinct kinds of "heat". The
damp-heat type; the fire-heat type and
the stagnant-heat
type.
Each would
have somewhat difierent clinical
pre-
sentalion
and the
principles
of
treatment
are also different. At times, these
three
types may even inter-mix and alternate
with one another and treatment must
be adjusted accordingly. Above all, the
appropriate
diet for the diabetic
is
paramount.
