FORMULATING A STRATEGY
TO COMBAT
THE INCREASING
URBAN CANCER INCIDENCE
INTHE
NEW CENTURY
Cancer
is
the number
1
killer.
The
current annual
deaths
of 6
million
deaths
will
be doubled by
2020.
ln
China, 1.3 million lives are
affected
each year; for the
last
10
years,
lung
cancer
has been the
commonest
in
men
and breast cancer, in women;
even
large bowel, prostate and womb can-
cer incidence
rates are
steadily
rising,
especially in
the
large cities.
To
formu-
late
the
best
strategy,
relevant
factors
must be
noted.
Smoking,
drinking
and
the diet
are directly implicated, bul even
air
pollution
that
is
getting
more
and
more serious
in
large cities
is
not
exempt. An
estimated 80%
of
all
large
bowel, breast and prostate cancers are
related to excessively rich
diets.
Drink-
ing is
related
to upper respiratory
and
digestive tract cancers. The annual con-
sumption
of
cereals of urban dwellers
is steadily decreasing and
the
con-
sumption
of
fat-rich food items
is
corre-
spondingly increasing.
Liver
cancer
is
often due
to pre-existing hepatitis
B
or
C
that would spread through
the
blood
or sexual contact so
that
sexual
pro-
miscuity would indirectly contribute to
increases
of
liver cancers. The other
main factor
is
the
rapidly aging popula-
tion - as cancers occur in middle
and
old age groups,
there
is an apparent
increase
as
the population ages rapidly.
