Diabetes
and
its many complica-
tions
have already become the world's
main current
disease and
have also
caused tremendous financial and
so-
cial eflects.
ln
China, 2-3%
of
the popu-
lation have diabetes,
of
these,
95o/o a.ta
of
type
ll.
High blood sugar
is
just the
result of
a
disease process and
not
the
cause.
Throughout
history, the strife
to
lower blood sugar has been the
main
goal, however, from now
on,
we should
also work on combining with traditional
Chinese medicine (TCM)
lor a
more
comprehensive attack on
diabetes.
TCM
probably
can
offer
a
milder but
more sustained sugar level control; ac-
tivate micro-circulation; lower
blood
lipids; reduce the viscosity of blood; of-
fer
anti-oxidant
effects;
reduce
the
an-
tagonistic
etfects
on
insulin, etc. Thus,
TCM would
be able
to
reduce
the
inci-
dence
and severity of
complications
associated with chronic
diabetes.
However,
it
must also be understood
that
TCM
also
has
it
disadvantages: the
effect of blood sugar lowering is not as
marked nor as predictable as Western
medications.
ln fact, the TCM
concept
of diabetes control was based on clini-
cal observation;
even
the
control end-
point
could
not be
well
documented.
Hence,
the
best is
to
combine
both
West and TCM.
