LEGIONNIARE'S
DISEASE

1976, after a legionnaire's din-
ner in
a
hotel in
the
USA,
221
of them
had high fever,
chills, headache, muscle
ache, cough,
chest pain and
even
blood-stained phlegm; others
had
tummy ache,
diarrhea
and vomiting
or
an
intense craving
for sleep,
mental
confusion
etc.
Unfortunately, 34 of
these falling sick had since died from
this
newly discovered disease called
"Legionnaire's disease", named after
that serious incident
in
the
hotel.
The
disease
is
very serious as
it
has
a
mor-
tality
rate of
around
15%. An air-borne
bacteria harboring
in
the water
of
the
air-conditioning system
had
caused
a
kind of serious pneumonia in
these
legionnaires. After this report came out,
a
few more similar incidences had also
occurred elsewhere and were found
to
be from
the
same bacteria.
After
a
whole night's stagnation, the
first
run
of
tap water
in
the
morning
should
not
be used for drinking. Clean
thoroughly
all
central air-conditioners
at
regular
intervals.
ln
this way,
the harmful efiects
of
Legionnaire's disease can
thus
be
avoided.
