TREATMENT
Foryears,
the
medical profession-
als have been looking forward to some
breakthrough
in
diabetes treatment and
the
perspectives seem
more
favourable
now. Cyclosporin
A,
an
immunity
suppresser
used
for
organ transplants,
may be useful for early
type
I
diabetes.
Nicotinamide functions mainly
by
eradi-
cation of
free
radicals and
is
especially
useful as an adjunct to cyclosporin A
and insulin. Transplantation
of
the pan-
creas can now
be
done and thousands
of
patients have undergone
such
operations. Type
I
diabetes
patients
with
poor
control may
be
considered
but
the
adverse reactions can be rather severe
and
the

year
survival.

be

ous supply
of
insulin. This
can
be pre-
programmed according
to
the
estimated
requirement or else regulated by com-
puter according to
the
actual
need,
simulating
the
natural pancreas.
