STROKE.A PROBLEM
OF
INCREASINGLY
CONCERN
In China,
there are
now
6
million
stroke victims of whom 3/4 have lost
their working ability and
407o
are
seri-
ously disabled so
that
medical costs
and labour loss amounts to over 10 bil-
lion
dollars.
Stroke can be due to
throm-
bosis arising from
clots
inside the
ves-
sel supplying the brain or haemonhage
(bleeding) from the
vessel.
Sudden but
temporary
loss of
consciousness, clum-
siness
ol
limb movements, numbness
or slurring of speech are warning signs
of
an impending stroke,
but
the relation-
ship
between
changes
in
the
morphol-
ogy
of
the blood and stroke are not sci-
entifically established.
During an
attack,
unconscious patients
should
lie
flat
on
one
pillow with
the
head turned to one
side.
Patients with
a
special form of
haemorrhage
called
"sub-arachnoid
haemorrhage" must
rest in
bed for
about
a
month
to
prevent
recurrent
bleeding.
More commonly, strokes are
caused by high blood pressure-must
always be
treated religiously.
Regular
medical checks and the highest degree
of
compliance
are
mandatory.
Moreover,
the
pace of
work
must
be
regulated and periods of relaxation built
into
the
schedule so
that the
mind and
body can be
in
the
optimal condition.
