IMMUNITY FORTUMOURS
ln
1964, Burnet put forward the
"tumour
immune surveillance"
conception. The immune mechanism of
the organism was thought to
be
able
to
recognise cancer cells and anti-cancer
immune response was stimulated.
ln
fact,
tumour
response protein could be
of
the "tumour specific antigen"
or
the
'tumour
associated antigen" types. The
various mechanisms involved was very
complex and
may
either
be
the
"cellu-
la/'or
the
"humoral"
or body
fluid types.
The most remarkable phenomenon
is
the ability
of
almost all cancer
cells
to
by-pass such body immune
mecha-
nisms and continue to
thrive
inside the
body and scientists are now working on
the "tumour micro-environment" con-
cept
-
a more detail study of all factors
involved in
the immune response. lt
is
expected that a more reasonable
ex-
planation why the cancer cell can
es-
cape
the
immune surveillance of the
body
would eventually
be obtained.
At
present, immunotherapy methods
en-
hance "specific"
or
"non-specific"
immunity.
There are also immuno-regu-
lators like Yunzhi (PSP), interferon
etc.
A
lot of
scientilic
studies are
siill
on-
going.
