THE MANAGEMENT
OF
COMPLICATIONS OF
ELDERLY
DIABETICS
As the elderly body functions are
sub-optimal and adaptation to change,
less efficient, complications of
the
eld-
erly
diabetics
are
more difficulty
to
manage. A different criteria to ditferen-
tiate the management
of
elderly diabet-
ics
is
advocated:
the'!in"
deficient type
for which herbs for strengthening the
"yin"
are
required; the type with defi-
ciency in both the
"qi"
and the
'!in"
that
requires not only herbs for strengthen-
ing
the "yin"
but also
the
"qi";
the
type
with dampness and
phlegm
would
re-
quire herbs to eradicate dampness and
to
liquefy the
phlegm;
those with
liver
congestion and
"qi"
stagnation would
require
herbs
to decongest the
liver
and
to manage the
"qi";
those
that
are defi-
cient both
in
the spleen and kidney sys-
tems would require herbs to strengthen
the spleen
and
the
kidney
systems; with
deficiency
in
both the "yin" and
the
"yang", strengthening
of
both
is
required; similarly, blood stasis must be
managed
by
activating the blood
and
circulation. The combination
of West-
ern and traditional Chinese medicine
is
highly beneficial as they are actually
complementary to
each other
-
West-
ern medicine is good
at
physical
de-
rangement documentation;
for
tradi-
tional Chinese medicine, the
whole
body is
expertly
managed.
