With rising standards of living
in
the Chinese, the pattern of diseases
is
also changing. lnfections are
now
largely controlled and mal-nutrition
is
hardly
seen
but
heart disease,
stroke,
cancer and respiratory tract diseases
are now
the
main killers; gall stones,
diabetes, fatty
liver,
osteoporosis and
other degenerative bone diseases are
also
commoner. Avoid excessive fat
(especially animal ones) intake so
as
to reduce
the
chances of heart disease,
stroke, colo-rectal and breast cancers.
Salted
fish
contain a cancer-causing
chemical (nitrosamine)
that
may attack
the
nasopharynx,
the gullet
and the
stomach;
mouldy food
contains aflatoxin
that
causes liver cancer; burnt meat
also contains cancer causing chemi-
cals; even
taking
more
than
5 gram
of
salt a day
may
also raise blood pres-
sure
and
render
the inner
lining of
the
stomach more susceptible to cancer
causing chemicals; excessive carbohy-
drates
(rice,
flour and sugars)
may
con-
tribute
to
diabetes; smoking not only
causes cancer
but also affects the
heart
and
the
lungs;
spirit
consumption
causes liver hardening and promotes
cancer. Finally, pay attention
to
body
hygiene and take regular exercises.
