BODY IMMUNITY
The human body has a
defense
system against
bacteria, e.9.,
the
skin
and
mucous membranes secrete
a
substance
to
control
lhe
growth
of
bacteria there; the stomach secretes a
strong acid that can kill many bacteria.
Cellular immunity
involves
defense cells
engulfing bacteria inside
the
body.
Humoral immunity
is
mediated through
complements
and
interferons. Good
collaboration of both is
required.
After
an infection,
a
natural
immunity
is
developed.
Artif icially
induced immunity
is
an
extremely important
tool
in
modern infectious disease control.
Antigen
in
the
bodywould
stimulate the
specific antibody production to destroy
the
specific
antigen.
Although
passive
immunity is less etfective than active
ones,
gamma globulins injected
into
the
body offers a prompt
but temporary
infection control.
Harmful
or excessive
anligen-antibody reactions
are
considered
"allergic"
reactions.
"Auto-immune"
diseases are due
to
harmful self-destruction
through
immunity. Because of various research
on
immunity,
progress has
been
considerable
on
auto-immune diseases,
cancer(e.9.,
using
monoclonal
antibodies against
the
cancer cells),
organ transplant(to prevent rejection
of transplanted organs) and
certain
immune deficiency states.
