Tuberculosis of
the
lung, which
was epidemic
in
the 80s
is
now coming
back.
The World
Health Organization
warns
that
in
the
next
10
years,
it may
take away 30 million
lives. The
reason
- in
the
past 20
years,
many
countries
have little or no control policy for this
disease.
The worst problem facing the
present generation
is
the emergence of
resistant
strains
of the
tubercle
bacte-
ria.
Another
factor
is
the
over-popula-
tion of modern cities - under-nourished
people
are
crammed
together.
With
the
lack
of hygienic
provisions,
tuberculo-
sis
would spread
very
fast.
Useful
tests
for tuberculosis include tuberculin test,
chest X-ray and sputum
examination.
For prevention,
BCG
vaccination
is
available and
is
most
effective
for
children.
To
avoid
the dreadful
emer-
gence
of
resistant bacterial
strains,
all
patients
should
make sure
that
they
take the prescribed dose of medication
and finish the course of antibiotics.
