UPDATE ON MEDICINAL
VALUE
OF
THE WILD
SEABUCKTHORN
FRUIT
The seabuckthorn fruit
is
sour and
mildly sweet and contains Vitamins 81,
B.2,
C,
E
and
beta-carotene; the
f
ruit
juice
is
rich
in
aspartic acid
(an
amino-acid).
The seed
contains
vitamins, amino-acids,
f
lavones, sugars
and
lipo-acids.
Wine,
juice,
jam,
imitation vinegar or even medicine can
be
made.
The
fruit
may lower
lipid
peroxidation which
is
closely
linked
with
atherosclerosis (hardening of arteries).
Blood cholesterol, low-density lipo-pro-
tein
("bad"
cholesterol)
and
triglycerides
are lowered but high-density
lipo-pro-
tein
("good"
cholesterol),
raised.
Moreover, the
fruit
can also enhance
the
body immune system: boost T-cell
and natural killer cell function
etc.
The
oil
from
the
fruit
may
also
prevent
cellular damage, and prevent chemical
hepatitis due to toxic
drugs.
Antioxi-
dant properties
of
the
fruit
is
said
to
be
more powerful than
vitamin
E, espe-
cially its anti-ageing effect. Thus, it
is
very worthwhile
to
explore fully
the
medicinal use
of the
seabuckthorn
fruit.
