AGAINST
THE TREND
Normally, when an X-ray shadow
of
the oesophagus (swallowing tube)
is
desired, the patient is asked to swal-
low
some
Barium
suspension or
even
to
take
a
"Barium
meal"
lo
cast
a
shadow
of
the stomach and adjoining
small
intestine.
By
going against the
trend,
a
Barium enema
can also
be
done
by introducing
through the other
end
in
a reverse direction
into
the large
bowel.
These "unconventional"
meth-
ods are very
useful
for demonstrating
polyps
in the
large bowel and for
detecting
the
cause
of
large
bowel
obstruction.
For children
with
"intussusception" of
the
bowel,
this
would
not only
diagnose but
may also
help
to
reverse
it.
"Retrograde
pyelogram" involves inserting a narrow
catheter through
the
bladder into the
openings of
the
ureters (which bring
urine from the kidneys)
and
injecting
contrast material for
X-ray.
Abnormali-
ties of the
kidneys and ureters
are
shown.
Another
similar
procedure
(ERCP)
involves inserting a
small
catheter
(through
a
fibreoptic
scope
in
the first part
of
the small gut) into the
common opening
ol the
bile
and
pancreatic ducts, injecting contrast
lor
X-ray.
