Transient lschaemic Attacks(TlA)
results
lrom
a
transient disturbance
of
blood supply to
a
localized area ol
the
brain.
Most
of
these TIA are tranisent
-
symptoms and signs disappear
within
24
hours.
However, these TIA may
re-
cur.
The
choice treatment for
TIA
is
aspirin
tablets. ln
1994, an
American
ad hoc
Committee
published the
agreed
standard
treatment
scheme
for
TlA.
Aspirin is indicated regardless of sex
and
age, or whether
the
patient is
sut
fering from diabetes or hypertension.
The daily dose of aspirin tablets
is
325-
1300
mg.
ln cases with suboptimal
re-
sponse, other
drugs
may be added as
directed
by
the
doctor.
ln patients with
such severe carotid artery occlusion
due to hardening and thickening of the
arterial wall (atherosclerosis)
as
to
re-
sult in
more
lhan
70"/"
blood
flow
re-
duction, an operation called
carotid
endarterectomy
to
removal part of
the
thickened
inner
wall ol the artery should
be considered.
