INFANTS!
lnfants dying
in
their
sleep,
usually at 2-6 months of age,
is
very
tragic.
The incidence rate
is
1.5
to
2
per thousand
infants.
Possible causes
include allergies (milk,
dust,
polyester
vapour,
insect etc); excessive clothing
leading
to excessive warmth
and
lluid
loss
from sweating (like
"sun stroke");
regurgitation from the stomach leading
to choking; excessive and thick phlegm
causing choking; autonomic nervous
system anomalies causing inability to
cry when
breathing
is
inadequate;
metabolic disorders; excessive passive
smoking
by
the infant (before and soon
after
birth); genetic
abnormalities
leading
to
irregular heart
beats;
infection contracted inside the womb
causing
excessive
enlargement
of the
lymphoid tissues in
the
upper airways;
inappropriate
birth
induction
and even
sleeping
on the
tummy
-
the relative risk
factor is
estimated
to
be 4.5 times
higher as compared with sleeping
on
the
back or on
the
side.
