THE MYSTERY OF
DREAMS
The ancient belief of
prophetic
value
of
dreams may
be
exaggerated
through anecdotal
examples.
ln the
50's, Aserinsky first obserued the close
relationship
between
rapid
eye
movement during sleep and
dreaming'.
Modern
analysis of dreams
found
unhappy dreams tend
to
increase with
age;
children
often
dream
of playing
and
games; dreams
m
sex is more
frequent
in males
"no
A.arried.
Hence,
this
is thought
to
be a compensatory
phenomenon.
ln
general, dreams
are
more
frequent
in
those who have
less
sound
sleep.
lntroverts
and
the
"worrying
gpe"
of
individuals
have
more
dreams
and these tend
to
be more vivid.
Scientists
found
that
after
sleep,
there
is
a
periodic appearance
of
"rapid eye
movement
sleep"
(REMS)
that
are
associated with
dreaming.
The
more
rapid
the eye movement, the more vivid
the
dream.
Even
today, dreams remain
a mystery to scientists and much more
work has
to
be done.
