TREATMENT
OF
DIABETES
BY TCM
ln traditional Chinese medicine
(TCM), patients with diabetes are usu-
ally
treated
based on an overall
analysis
of his
symptoms
and
signs
including
the
causes, nature and location ol the
ill-
ness and the patient's condition
such
as
the
regularity
of
pulse and
the
appearance
of
the tonge
etc.
Diabetes
is
called
the
"Westing and thirsty
Syndrome" in
TCM, and
is
considered
a disorder caused
by
depletion
ol
Yin
(the Negative) and Yang (the Positive),
and Qi
(the
vital energy) and Blood due
to excessive
heat inside of
the
human
body.
Three
types
of
diabetes
has
been
recognised
by the
TCM doctors,
i.e.
the
upper,
middle
and
lower diabetes,
which are characterized by polydypsia,
polyphagia and polyuria,
respectively.
Thus,
the
principles of treatment
are
nourishing the vital essence and clean
up
the
internal
(evil)
heat.
