DIABETICS
Patients
with diabetes
mellitus
may be
complicated
by bone and
joint
disorders including
osteoporosis.
Diabetes is one
of the
disorders
in
which osteoporosis is associated but
pathogenesis
not
understood.
Malnu-
trition
and vascular lesions
or
neuropathy due to the diabetes
have
been considered
the
causes of the
complications.
lt has been estimated
that the bone and
joint
complications
can be
observed
in
about 7.5%
ol
patients after
10
years
ol
clinical dia-
betes.
The complication can be
mild
(asymptomatic) or serious degree of
bone
loss or
disabilities.
High
incidence
of
debilitating can be
frequently
occurred.
Early diagnostic aids include
x-ray, bone densitimeter and bone-min-
eral analysis
etc.
Education of the pa-
tients
to maintain
a normal level of
blood
glucose and adequate
intake of
protein,
vitamins and minerals including vitamin
D
and calcium
is
important to prevent
from
the
bone and
joint
abnormalities.
