HYPERTENSION
The term of
toxemia
of preg-
nancy
includes
those disorders en-
countered during gestation
or
shortly after
delivery.
They
are
characterized
by
the appearance
of hypertension,
edema,
and
proteinuria
(preeclampsia).
ln se-
vere cases,
convulsion
and
coma
(eclampsia) may
occur.
The
on-
set of
the syndrome may
be
insidi-
ous
or shockingly
abrupt.
Hyper-
tension
is usually an early
sign
of
the syndrome.
Because of
the
potentially
severe
results of tox-
emia,
all
women
in
pregnancy
should
not disregard
the
signifi-
cance
of
a
rising
blood
pressure.
The management
is
more
ap-
propriate than
treatment
because
far more is
required
than the
pre-
scription of
a
drug.
The
patient
must
be
evaluated with particular
reference to
the
interaction
be-
tween
her
disease and
life
pattern.
Seekang
regular medical
advice
during
the
whole
gestation
period
is
recommended.
