Dietary management
for
diabetes
Diabetes mellitus
is
a
disease
with significant endocrine
and
metabolic disturbances.
The dia-
betic syndrome has
a
genetic pre-
disposition and
is
characterized by
an
absolute or relative
lack of cir-
culating
insulin.
The
incidence
of
diabetes
is
increasing
at
a
rate of
aboul
O.4o/o
per
year.
Precipitation
of
the condition
by
extrapancreatic
factors includes
psychological
stress, obesity, multiple
preg-
nancy, trauma, infection, and
op-
eration
etc.
Proper dietary
man-
agement
is
required for the safe
and effective use of hypoglycemic
agents.
ln many cases with adult-
onset diabetes, the condition
can
often
be
controlled
by dietary
treat-
ment
alone.
Based on the
theory
of traditional Chinese
medicine
(TCM), diabetes
is called
the
"wasting
and
thirsty
syndrome".
Based
on
TCM theory, a number
of
recipe
of
medicated
diet,
i.e.,
medicinal herbs
are
used
and
cooked together
with food,
are
popularly
recommended to treat
the
disease.
The
present paper
has made
a
few examples to de-
scribe how to prepare these medi-
cated diet.
