ANGINA
PECTORIS,
IS
IT
A
FEARFUL
DISEASE?
Angina pectoris
is a clinical
syndrome characterized
by
chest
pain during physical activity
or
emotion.
Approximately
three
fourths
of
patients with
angina
pectoris are males, and the typical
patient is in
his
fifties or early
six-
ties
and
seeks
medical
advice
be-
cause
of
chest
discomfort.
Severe
coronary atherosclerosis
always
produces
this type
of
ischemic
heart
disease.
The
three major risk
factors are hypercholesterolemia,
hypertension and cigarette
smok-
ing; all are
subject
to
control.
Hypercholesterolemia can
be
con-
trolled
by
diet or
in certain
in-
stances by
medication.
Hyperten-
sion
can
and
should
be
controlled
by
medication;
a
significant
de-
crease in mortality rate has
been
observed
in
association
with such
control.
Cigarette smoking should
be
discouraged,
especially
in
young
people.
Other
risk
factors,
some of which are amenable
to
control, are diabetes mellitus, obe-
sity, sedentary living,
and
psychosocial tensions.
By
the time the disease has
become symptomatic, the process
in
arteries will
be
far advanced and
prevention, therefore must be di-
rected at the asymptomatic
dis-
ease.
Thus, a prevention program
based upon the control of
"risk
fac-
tors" should be initiated even
in
childhood.
