Errors in understanding
and
managment diabe-
tes
mellitus
It
has been established that
there
are
about
six
percent
of the
population in the world suffering
from diabetes
mellitus.
lt
is
impor-
tant to educate the patient to man-
age
his
diabetes mellitus correctly.
Treatment will vary greatly
from patient
to
patient; however,
the
best
results
can
be obtained
by
close cooperation between the
patient and the
internist.
Educa-
tion
of
the
patient
to
prevent er-
rors
of
understanding
the
general
principles of
treatment is
impor-
tant.
Cautions
should
be empha-
sized
are:
(1)
the diet
should
be
restricted
in
total calories, yet
nu-
tritionally adequate; (2) satisfac-
tory levels
of
blood glucose should
not be confirmed only by monitor-
ing
glucosuria;
(3)
the
condition
can
be precipitated by using the
diabetogenic diuretics of
benzotha'ine,
etc.
This paper dis-
cussed

fre-
quently encountered.
