Chinese
idioms
describe
the
same idea of someone consol-
ing
himself
with
false
hopes.
What
the
idioms describe
is,
partly
true.
Literally,
the
central
meaning of both idioms
implies
the
idea
of
feeding
on
fancies
or
illusions, i.e., either the
feel-
ing of
thirst
or
hunger
can
be
relieved
by
hopes.
Medically,
thirst
is
possibly alleviated
by
thinking of
salt-preserved
plums through the neurological
reflex
regulation.
However,
hunger feeling would
be
further
increased
by
drawing
cakes
through
the
same
neurologic
mechanism.
Thus, idioms
re-
lated
to
physiological
ideas
may
make sense literally,
but
not
necessarily
make
sense
medically
or
physiologicalty.
