Drive Away Age-related Macular Degeneration
Despite the name, “age-related macular degeneration (AMD)”, is occasionally genetic or infective. The “wet” type of AMD has new
blood vessels: bleeding or oozing leads to swelling or even blindness. AMD presents as painless blurring or dark center vision;
crooked straight lines; twisted objects; hypersensitivity to light or seeing non-existing lights, shape or color; a good eye may also
mask a bad one. Treatment is by laser, operation and photodynamic therapy; injection of anti-angiogenesis agents is simple, safe and
non-invasive. For prevention, take more dark green veggies rich in lutein & zeaxanthin; coffee rich in chlorogenic acid: an antioxidant
slowing down degeneration; green veggies and fruits rich in bio natural yellow pigment & vitamin C; carrots rich in beta-carotene; nuts
rich in vitamin E & arginine: relaxes blood vessels, lower cholesterol & fatty acids; ensure adequate vitamin D: milk, fish, nuts and
cereals; bilberry rich in rhodopsin: required to enhance night vision; flavonoids protect blood vessels; prevents cataract, glaucoma and
AMD; deep sea fish rich in omega-3 & unsaturated fats; avoid saturated fats and high cholesterol diets. Refrain from smoking; control
hypertension, cholesterol and diabetes. Above all, check vision regularly!
