The Killer of Computer Users: Thoracic Outlet Syndrome
Thoracic outlet syndrome is common among frequent computer users. As the thoracic outlet has the collarbone above and the
first rib below, when the nerves and vessels go out towards the upper limb, compression may occur here. As female subjects
may lack shoulder muscle exercises, the upper limb may droop down, causing the collarbone linked to the upper limb to
come closer to the first rib which does not droop together with the upper limb: the gap now narrows: compression occurs.
When the median nerve is compressed, the first 3 fingers are numb; when the ulnar nerve is compressed, the last 2 fingers are
numb; when all fingers are numb, both nerves are compressed. For mild cases, conservative means, e.g., physical exercises,
badminton, ping pong, etc., suffice. For those not improving after conservative treatment for 3 months, operation may be
considered. Ensure correct postures; avoid twisting of the wrist; adjust table & chair heights appropriately; sit upright; stand up
every 0.5-1 hour to exercise. Above all, have regular shoulder exercises, e.g., play badminton or ping pong for half an hour a
day!
