The Father of Dendrobium Officinale: Pioneering From Endangered Rare TCM Herb to
Industrialization: an Interview with Zhang ZhiGuo: Research Scientist of the Zhejiang

Dendrobium officinale (Dendrobium) could up keep intestines & stomach, build up muscles, foster brain development, and prolong
life. Many saw it as a life-saving plant. Dendrobium is a very highly regarded TCM herb: its stem constitutes a high-class medication
for soothing the voice, e.g., that of the very famous Beijing opera artiste Mei LanFang. As an anti-oxidant, it enhances immunity,
treats high blood pressure, strengthens the spleen, nourishes the stomach, relieves fatigue, repairs liver damage, and possibly kills
laboratory cancer cells, etc. But, with its very inefficient reproduction, Dendrobium is difficult to cultivate. Constant harvest of the wild
herb had soon made it an endangered herb: classified as a vulnerable wild plant under State Protection (Category III). Fortunately, Mr
Zhang has succeeded in cultivating seedlings with artificial cultivation techniques since 1998, then, his technique was successfully
applied in many Provinces, with an extremely rapid industrial growth: in 2011, the asset was 2 billion RM B. The future is very bright:
it is really effective and the State supports the innovative technology. Aim at enhancing QC and product variety for local and oversea
marketing.
