Stent Placement Does Not Equate to Problem Solved
According to Prof Ge Jun Bo of Fudan University, and Academecian of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, stents are better than balloon
angioplasty and the patient can avoid the complicated operation of coronary by-pass. The stent, like a folded umbrella, is introduced
through arteries under X-ray guidance; when fully home, the umbrella is released. Stenting is effective, safe and repeatable. However,
other coronaries may also become narrowed; re-narrowing of the same artery may also occur, at a rate of ~30% (~10% for drug eluting
stents) at 6 months – worse for long segment narrowing, or very narrow coronaries or for diabetics. Patients should take more veggies,
less salt, moderate exercises (as directed by your doctor); refrain from smoking. Drug-eluting stents are unsuitable for large coronaries
nor for patients >80 years – risk of stroke or hemorrhage as continuous anti-platelet drugs are required. As stenting for the elderly has
more complications, a conservative approach is appropriate
