Breast Cancers Occur Also in the Male
Once, the Author Dr Chou encountered a male patient of around 50, having male breast cancer presenting as a mild swelling
underneath the right nipple and the surrounding areola. Without signs of infection at all, it was initially thought to be due to the more
frequent use of his right arm. But, the swelling got harder and larger (size of an egg), with typical textbook “peau d’orange” (orange
peel) appearance on the skin. Chest CT scan and ultrasound reveal the diagnosis as breast cancer. He was operated under general
anesthesia but it had already spread to his right axillary lymph nodes; his right axilla was surgically cleared of all lymph nodes.
Male breast cancers often present at the age of 50-60; account for just 1-2% of all breast cancers; it may well be neglected as it is so
unexpected. Yet, the malignancy is worse and the risk of distant metastases, higher than the female counterparts. Patients with prostate
cancers given female hormones have higher risks. Take care: consult your doctor at the slightest suspicion!
