Foreign Fast Food Again Has Carcinogens: the Implications
McDonald’s in China assured Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), a de-foaming agent and tertiary butylhydroquinone (tBHQ), a petroleum-
based product, in their chicken McNuggets are safe. As tBHQ is carcinogenic and toxic, it should be a “food additive” for inspection.
In 2002, fast foods had acrylamide, a human carcinogen formed after deep frying. In 2005, Californian Attorney General Bill Lockyer
ruled that fast food French fries be labelled for their carcinogenic acrylamide content. Filmmaker Morgan Spurlock’s Oscar-winning
documentary (2005) described himself living strictly on McDonald’s for 30 days. After 2 weeks, his liver was damaged; after 3 weeks,
his heart was abnormal and he had to take aspirin tablets. After 1 month, his liver was intoxicated, his blood pressure; much higher; his
cholesterol, up by 65%; his bodyweight, up by 11 Kg. Fast foods are high in Calories, fat and protein; low in minerals, vitamins and
fibre. Fast foods also have too much halogenated oil and “trans” fatty acid – upsets our cholesterol. In USA, 5,500 Kentucky outlets
had to stop using halogenated oil; but nothing like that in China. We should now catch up!
