Why Does Death Occur After a Cat Bite?
September 28 is World Rabies Day: an easily preventable infection but invariably fatal if no prompt anti-rabies vaccine after being
bitten. After an incubation period of up to 3 months, deaths have also occurred after cat bites: cats are not immune! In the Middle East,
the commonest rabic mammal is the fox in Oman and United Arab Emirates. In China, >110,000 have died from rabies 1950-2008;
with a peak of 7,037 in 1981: second only to India; 94% involve dogs; 4%, cats; even pigs, wolves and rats have been infected very
occasionally. Symptoms are restlessness, shortness of breath, nausea and vomiting, drooping of saliva, inability and fear of swallowing
water and other liquids (hence the term “hydrophobia”). As in China, the sources of infection are getting wider with time, control must
be tightened, e.g., systematic registration of dogs; mandatory vaccination and watching for other infected mammals – if confirmed, their
destruction may be required to prevent human infection. As the WHO recognizes successful eradication of rabies in other countries, the
aim is rabies eradiation by 2020. We should all work hard together to make rabies history!
