What Does “Functional Agriculture” Lead to?
The International Schwartz Award was given to a team of professionals who discovered and successfully managed Keshan disease in
China to be due to the lack of a mineral selenium: now recognized to be a very major problem as the deficiency in selenium occurs in
as much a 72% of China’s farm land. As selenium prevents cancer formation through immune and anti-oxidant enhancement, anti-
angiogenesis required to prevent development of cancer cell deposits, etc., lack of it allows more frequent cancers in China. Functional
agriculture enables more optimum mineral contents, e.g., selenium of plant produce: this is deemed to be far better than taking mineral
supplements. Thus, China’s agriculture progresses from feeding up to safe staple to healthy staple, i.e., China is now in the era of
functional agriculture, with one or more minerals achieving established standards. A nano-selenium fertilizer or plant nutrition agent
has been developed by the Suzhou Research Institute, University of Science and Technology of China so that a specific standard of
selenium content of plant produce, e.g., rice, can now be achieved. According to the forecast by Academician Zhao Qiquo, by the year
2020, the gross product of functional agriculture of 100 billion would be achieved.
