Cortisol and Health
One of the hormones of our adrenal glands is cortisol (hydrocortisone): secreted abundantly in stress responses for “fight or flight”:
in the elderly, this reaction may be prolonged: blood sugar and pressure rise; fat in the body is eventually redistributed: “central
obesity” ensues; stomach secretion, appetite and liver detoxifying functions are increased; protein is mobilized, leading eventually to
muscle wasting; collagen formation is suppressed, leading to thinning and easy bruising of skin; blood potassium reduces. Cushing’s
syndrome is due to pathological over-secretion of cortisol: patient has “extreme tiredness but can’t sleep”, obesity, “buffalo hump”:
abnormal fat collection in the back and neck, “moon face” (a rounded face); acne, menstrual disturbance and hairiness (female).
Addison’s disease is pathological under-secretion of cortisol: dark complexion, weakness of muscle and bone, low blood sugar and
blood pressure, gut and neurological symptoms, weakness and tiredness, lack of stress response, etc. As our diurnal cortisol secretion
is lowest by 12MN-2am; highest at 6-8am, regularize living rhythm accordingly. Cortisol is immensely useful clinically for anti-
inflammation and a myriad of auto-immune diseases albeit with definite side effects: better collaborate well with your doctor especially
as no natural dietary items can take the place of cortisol. If in doubt, consult your doctor!
