Don’t Let Depression Catch the Mind
Depression is to lose interest in everything: one's favorite hobby or past time; even sex is no longer attractive; sleep is disturbed (insomnia
or excessive sleep); loss of self-esteem; abnormal guilty feelings; excessive procrastination, etc., let alone the marked tendency to
commit suicide: strong wills for this often have weak signals of their fatal intention (and vice versa); post-rescue complications may
also occur. As nobody has perfect psychological make up, no such imperfections would beget depression: it’s far better to take the
chance to improve oneself psychologically! As there are no specific blood tests for depression, specific criteria are devised (must
always be rated by specialists, otherwise diagnosis may be delayed), e.g., SDS (Sheehan disability scale), HAMD (Hamilton rating
scale for depression). Recognize that depressed patients are conceptually a “void of no return”: complete loss of interest, normal
feelings; gratitude and all appropriate interpersonal responses; a definite disease demanding tremendous tolerance, especially as no
amount of mere encouragement would ever work. Apart from specific treatments, persistent and regular physical exercises also helps
recovery. Even grapefruits, pumpkins and avocados may also help!
