A Pear a Day Drives the Doctor Away
Snow pear is hailed as an “all-embracing health fruit”: with vitamin A, beta-carotene, proteins, sugars, calcium, phosphorus, and lots
of dietary fiber: valuable for lowering cholesterol absorption. A study found that those who regularly take pears have a lower risk of
having cough and cold, as compared with those who have not been taking pears. Thus, pears are hailed as an “all-embracing health
fruit”, or even akin to a “family doctor”. Thus, the “pear” nay now substitute for “apple” in the motto “An apple a day, drives the doctor
away”, especially as pears are a traditional lung remedy and moistening and clearing lung heat: pears can sooth the irritation of the
throat and hoarseness of voice, constipation, urinary discomfort, etc. during upper respiratory infections. As vitamin C is destroyed by
heat, cooking pears is inappropriate; but, for those with weaker physique, cooking of pears would soften the dietary fibers and driving
away the cold and dampness. As pears are rich in sugar, diabetics should not take too many pears. Moreover, pears should not be
taken together with goose meat, mustard leaf, radish and hairy crabs, as reaction may ensure.
