A NATURAL GEM: THE
"ELECTRIC STONE"
Tourmaline was first dis-
covered in Brazil by a Portu-
guese Navigator Team in the
16th Century. Although a semi-
precious natural stone, tourma-
line was named "rainbow gem-
stone" as it occurs in all colours
of the sunray spectrum. In
1898, the Curie family discov-
ered heating tourmaline pro-
duced an electric charge, hence
its name "the electric stone".
The weak electric current and
the far infrared rays convert
moisture in the air to negative
ions that are more natural than
machine generated ones.
Negative ions are "the vitamins
of the air"; bad odour from drink-
ing water is removed; the water
is mineralized. As far infrared
rays penetrate our tissues, it
may be useful for muscle stiff-
ness by improving circulation.
For cosmetics, the current may
increase the absorption of nu-
trients into the skin to enhance
the effects of skin applications,
contributing to the vitality of the
skin. Japanese researchers
also found that no matter how
small tourmaline is ground, it is
still capable of conveying an
electric current - when incorpo-
rated to textile, these may serve
to improve circulation.Thus, the
very unique tourmaline proper-
ties have the potential to ben-
efit our health.
