NEW HORIZONS
FOR
TRADITIONAL
CHINESE
MEDICINE:
INTERVIEW
WITH
PROF
LIU
DAOJU,
MAGNETIC
MEDICINE
RESEARCH
LABORATORY
TIANJIN
The Chinese had
invented the
compass,
in
the 2nd Century,
Shen
Nong's Materia Medica recorded mag-
netite
for
medicinal
use.
ln
1963
,
G
Baule
&
R McFee
first
recorded the
human head magnetic
field at
Syra-
cuse University, USA
Later,
a
very sen-
sitive instrument, the superconducting
quantum interference device (SQUID)
was invented
to detect
minute
mag-
netic fields- an impoftant milestone. ln
1974, a rotating magnetic machine
for
medical use was successfully made
in
Beijing,
with
magnetic strength of 600
to
1 ,200 G
then and
up
to
2,000
G
now. From
1
980, permanent magnetic
material can be made and machined
in Tianjin
for
medical use
-
a signifi-
cant breakthrough. From
1 980-84,
Prof Liu
has performed
a 2O0-subject
study with magnetic flux threshold gra-
dient technique
to
document
human
lung magnetic field changes.
All
these
areas
of
detectable body magnetic field
changes
or
"magnetic field detection
zones"
have
wide
medical
applications,
e.9., for regulating blood pressure.
ln
radiology, magnetic resonance
is
widely employed for
detail
body struc-
ture
/
pathology ima ging ( M R
I )
or
for
arteries (angiography, MRA). China
is leading
in
the wide application
of
magnetism in medicine.
