DETOXIFICATION
BY
DIET
WHY A VOGUE
IN
THE
WEST?
ln
1960,
British nutritionists
Trowell
and
others found
low
incidences
of
coronaries,
stroke, diabetes, obesity,
can-
cers
and
constipation
of native
Ugandans
and attributed
such
to be
related
to
people's
high
dietary fiber intake
in
1972.
Di-
etary
fiber
is a collective term
for
a
variety of plant
substances
that
are
resistant to
digestion
by
our enzymes
in
our gut. Dietary
fibers can be classified in
2
major groups depending
on
their solubility in water.
ln
humans, the structural
or
ma-
trix
fibers
(lignins, cellulose,
and
some hemicelluloses)
are
insoluble, whereas the
natural
gel-forming fibers
(pectins,
oat
bran, guar gums,
mucilages,
and
the
remainder
of
the
hemicelluloses)
are
soluble.
The
recommendation
is
to take
at
least
30
g
of
dietary fiber that
would remain
in our
gut
to
stimulate bowel
motion
effectively.
These
"scavengers
of
the
bowel"
help
to
prevent
atherosclerosis or hardening of
blood vessels, diabetes, bowel
cancers, constipation
and
obesity. Take more
vegetables
and
fruits - apart from
fibers,
they also
have
other
nutrients,
e.9., anthocyanidin, potassium,
carotenol
and
veralkamine,
etc.
