DIALYSIS
When diabetes
affects the
kidneys, uremia
may
eventually
develop.
Uremia is
the
accumu-
lation of urea
in
the blood,
as
the
kidneys
are
unable
to get
rid
of
them
-
a
waste product
of
metabolism.
Despite
the onset of
kidney
failure
and
the necessity
for dialysis,
blood
sugar
level
must
still
be
controlled well.
Be-
fore
dialysis, progressive
kidney
failure demand
a
diet very low
in
protein
to spare
the kidneys; with
dialysis, this may be relaxed,
es-
pecially as
dialysis
may
consume
a small quantity of amino acids
(equivalent
to
one
tael of
meat).
First class
proteins
are
from
meat, fish,
eggs and
milk.
As milk
has high phosphorus
content,
limit
to
1
glass per
day.
Take
a
well-balanced
diet with 6-7 taels
of
meat
daily.

required,
take
supplement
vitamin
B
complex
and
C. Take body
weight daily
around
the
same time
of
the day;
between
2
dialyses,
ensure
weight gain
is
<5%
-
as water
can
no longer be excreted by
the
kidneys, too
much
water retained
by
the
body may overload
the
heart.
