IN
THE
MIDDLE/OLD
AGE
As China's population
is
rapidly aging, and,
as
the elderly
requires more medication, their
livers suffer
not
only from
aging
but
also
from
a
multiplicity
of
medications. The
liver
is
the
main
organ responsible for processing
drugs taken into our bodies-drug
metabolism and detoxification of
antibiotics, chemotherapy, card-
io-vascular, cholesterol-low-
ering, anti-rheumatic and various
psychiatric
drugs.
Even tradi-
tional Chinese herbs are not ex-
empt-some
reports
attribute
1/3
of
drug-related
liver
diseases
to
be due
to
herbs.
The
liver may
also
be
affected
by
drinking. With
age,
the tolerance
of
the
liver to
alcohol
is
progressively less, es-
pecially as
food
absorption from
the gut (to
nourish
the liver)
is
also less optimal. "Fatty
live/'
re-
fers to
a
subtle liver damage that
is
entirely independent
of alcohol.
It is partially
related
to
obesity
and overweight.
Whilst
reducing
weight,
these
patients
should
also have
meals
frequent enough
to
avoid further damaging their
liver.
